EndSARS Campaign – SWAT Announcement

The Inspector General of Nigeria’s Police, Mohammed Adamu, has announced the setting up of a new unit of the police known as Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT). This unit will replace the recently disbanded notorious defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.

According to the Police Head, all prospective members of this new team will also undergo psychological and medical examination to ensure their fitness and eligibility for the new assignment.

They are expected to resume training at the different Police tactical training institutions nationwide precisely by next week.

The PRO of the Police Force, Mr. Frank Mba who also doubles as Deputy Commissioner of Police, in a statement said there will not be swapping of training grounds for the new officers.

While officers from the Police Commands in the South-East and the South-South receive their training at the Counter-Terrorism College, Nonwa-Tai, Rivers State, those from the Police Commands from the North and the South-West will receive their training at the Police Mobile Force Training College, Ende, Nasarawa State and the Police Mobile Force Training College, Ila-Orangun, Osun State, respectively.

He while reaffirming his deep commitment towards the successful and holistic implementation of the Police reforms said that the IGP enjoins all members of the public, particularly protesting citizens to exercise restraint and allow measures being put in place to come to fruition and engender a Police Force that would meet the yearnings and aspirations of the citizenry.

Meanwhile, Nigerians have met this development in bad faith, showcasing their displeasure on the announcement of the SWAT. Most of them  see it as recycling the same set of people without any serious effort to actually meet the cries of the citizens.

For most Nigerians, SWAT simply means SARS With Another Title
