What is NIN?
NIN simply means National number. It consists of 11 non- intelligible numbers randomly chosen and assigned to a private after the completion of enrolment into the National Identity Database (NIDB).
Once a NIN is assigned to a private, it can never be reassigned, given or employed by another person – that creates it unique in nature. Within the case of the demise of a private, his/her NIN is retired once a death certificate is presented to the Commission and therefore the individual’s death is established.
The NIN is employed to tie all records about a private within the database and is additionally wont to establish or verify his/her identity. All citizens and legal residents in Nigeria, from age zero (birth) and above are eligible to enrol for his or her NINs.
First, Check if you have already got a NIN
The first step before you proceed to register to urge your NIN is to see if you have already got one. To understand this, with the phone wont to register for the NIN, Dial *346# on your phone to retrieve your NIN. Once your NIN is displayed, you’ll either screenshot it, or note it down somewhere. Please note that you are not to share your NIN information on any social media platform. You’ll however share it when requested by trusted institutions. Supporting Documents
Walk into the closest NIMC Enrolment Centre together with your BVN if you’ve got one and any of the subsequent required Original and Valid supporting documents:
1. Old National ID Card
2. Driver’s License
3. Voter’s card (Temporary or Permanent)
4. Nigerian International passport
5. Certificate of Origin
6. Attestation letter from a prominent ruler in your community
7. Birth certificate
8. Declaration aged
9. Attestation letter from religious/traditional leader
10. NHIS ID card
11. Government staff ID card
12. Registered/recognized private organization staff ID card
13. School ID Card (private/public)
14. Tax Clearance certificate
15. Valid immigration documents
16. Registration at an Enrolment Centre:
The whole process of registration are often administered at an enrolment centre. Thanks to COVID-19 restrictions, you’ll be required to book a schedule for your enrolment. However, to limit the quantity of your time you’ll spend at the enrolment centre, you’ll download, print and complete the enrolment form at (https://nimc.gov.ng/), then proceed to an enrolment centre to finish the remainder of the registration steps.
STEPS
1. Applicants are to steer into the enrolment Centre with a supporting document.
2. Applicant are going to be verified to determine if he/she has ever enrolled using the NIN verification portal.
3. Applicant are going to be issued an enrolment form to fill if he/she has not enrolled before. OR the printed Barcode slip (for those that applied online) are going to be collected if the applicant had pre-enrolled earlier using the pre-enrolment service.
4. Applicant’s forms are going to be vetted by a NIMC Official to crosscheck the knowledge filled on the shape against the supporting document provided and to see for errors/mistake filled on the shape. Note: applicants who cannot read nor write should be amid a literate individual who can do the shape filling for him/her.
5. Applicant’s pre-filled information are going to be inputted on the NIMC Software by a NIMC enrolment officer or the Barcode slip are going to be scanned by the NIMC enrolment officer to populate all the specified field.
6. The enrolment officer will ask the applicant to countercheck his/her information for errors using the applicant monitor.
7. If the applicant is satisfied with his/her demographic information, the biometrics (ten finger prints and facial image) of the applicant are going to be capture subsequently.
8. After completing the enrolment, a Transaction ID Slip are going to be issued to the applicant as an evidence of the transaction. However, the Transaction slip doesn’t confer the proper to National number. The applicant are going to be requested to return back for the NIN within 1-5 working days, because it is subjected to availability of network, authentication and verification.
A National number (NIN) Slip is issued to the applicants after processing.
The National e-ID Card are going to be Issued to applicant within 12months after Issuance of NIN barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Note:
Minor applicants (0-15 years of age) should be amid parents / guardians and may do the shape filling for them.
Minor applicants should only bring original and valid certificate and NIN slip of 1 of the Nigerian Parent/Guardian.
The National e-ID Card won’t be issued to minors until they become 16 years aged and above.
In the case of a minor, after completion of enrollment, a text message will automatically be sent to the Applicant, Parent or guardian to return for update once they become 16 years aged.
