How to Apply for Uppsala University Annual scholarships for prospective students will guide you on careful steps to successfully gain the scholarship of your dream and live a better life abroad.
There are a number of scholarships available each year for international students who pay fees. You may be applying for an international Bachelor’s or Master’s program at Uppsala University, this is an opportunity to gain scholarship.
Some scholarships are specifically designated for students who are applying for one of Uppsala University’s Master’s programs, whereas others are just for both Master’s and Bachelor’s prospective applicants.
Some scholarships are open for all citizens of a country outside of the European Union (EU)/European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, while others are only open for citizens of certain countries.
The scholarships available for application will not be same but may vary from year to year. The list of citizenships that are eligible for the King Carl Gustaf Scholarship also may vary from year to year.
Importantly, before you submit your application(s), be pretty sure that you carefully read the information about each scholarship thoroughly and that you understand the conditions very well. You may apply for more than one scholarship, as long as you fulfil the eligibility criteria.
It’s very important you carefully specify all the scholarships that you are applying for, in one scholarship application form for clarity purposes.
The scholarships are only for on-campus programs based in Uppsala or on Gotland, and for programs mainly taught at Uppsala University. You can only be awarded a scholarship for program that you apply for at the university official website.
Some exceptions exist in the sense that, you cannot be awarded a scholarship for the Joint Nordic Master’s Program in Environmental Law, Master’s program in Turkic Studies, Master’s program in Religion in Peace and Conflict, Master’s program in Implementation, Transformative Learning and Sustainability or Master’s program in Biology NABiS Nordic Master in Biodiversity and Systematics.
Special Instructions for Application period
The application period for scholarships provided by Uppsala University for prospective students is from 17 January to 1 February 2023.
The deadline is 23:59 CET (Central European Time) 1 February 2023. Please kindly give serious considerations to the time zone. Your application will not be considered if you submit late because the school has a policy that applications submitted after the deadline will not be processed.
How to apply – Uppsala University Annual scholarships
In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must first submit an application for a Bachelor’s or Master’s program at Uppsala University at website between 17 October 2022 and 16 January 2023. To apply for our scholarships, you need to submit an online application form during the scholarship application period. Access to the application form will be available on this page during the scholarship application period from 17 January – 1 February 2023.
The school authority will also review the supporting documents that you submit for your program application. So, don’t bother about submitting any extra documents in your scholarship application form.
Apply for a Bachelor’s or Master’s program- Uppsala University Annual scholarships
Be informed that before you can apply for Uppsala University’s scholarships, you first must have applied for one of Uppsala University’s international Bachelor’s or Master’s programs as your first choice.
For programs starting in the autumn semester of 2023, you must submit an online application between 17 October 2022 and 16 January 2023 to be considered. University Admission’s deadline for supporting documents and application fees is 1 February 2023. Find out more on how to apply for Master’s programs or Bachelor’s programs.
If your application is considered late, you will simply not be eligible for the Uppsala University scholarships.
Once you have submitted your application, you will get a personal application number consisting of eight digits. Be sure you save the number as you will need it when applying for Uppsala University’s scholarships.
Submit an online scholarship application
After the application period for study programs ends, the application period for Uppsala University scholarships opens. The application to University Admissions and the application for Uppsala University scholarships have two separate application procedures.
You must have to submit one different online application for our scholarships during our scholarship application period from 17 January – 1 February 2023.
In the online scholarship application form, you do not need to submit any documents. In the form, you need to fill in your personal details, the Bachelor’s or Master’s program at Uppsala University that you applied for as your first priority, and the application number that you got during your application for admission. You must as well indicate specifically which scholarship program(s) you are applying to.
Again, you need to write a good motivation letter explaining why you should be awarded the scholarship. Your motivation letter should not be more than 350 words and should reflect the eligibility criteria of the specific scholarship program.
You are free to apply to more than one scholarship program, so long as you meet all the eligibility criteria. However, it is only possible to be awarded one scholarship from Uppsala University. There is no application fee when applying for Uppsala University’s scholarships. However, there is an application fee when applying for your study programs.
Please make sure to submit your scholarship application on time because Uppsala University do not accept late applications for whatsoever reason.
Please do not apply for the scholarship if you:
- do not meet the entry requirements for admission to Uppsala University;
- have not selected a program at Uppsala University as your first choice in your application;
- will not be able to secure the funding needed to cover your cost of living, as required by the Swedish Migration Agency, even if you are awarded a scholarship that covers the cost of tuition.

Selection Process
Uppsala University’s scholarships are for only students who are liable to pay tuition fees. The selection is strictly merit-based. The scholarships are aimed at highly academically talented students who show a special interest and capacity in being in an educational environment.
Information about your academic performance will be obtained from the supporting documents that you earlier submitted when applying for Master’s or Bachelor’s studies. Be informed that the written motivational letter filled in your online scholarship application is also taken into account in the selection process.
The School does not see financial need as a factor to consider.
The scholarship selection process takes place at the same time as the program admission selection process. In order to be admitted to a study program and be awarded a scholarship, you must meet all the general and program-specific entry requirements for the study program, as well as all the eligibility criteria for the scholarship program.
Applicants who submit incomplete applications or do not apply on time will not be considered for a scholarship at Uppsala University.

- Uppsala University President’s Club Scholarship
- Scholarships open to citizens of Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Tunisia and Uganda:

- Scholarships open to citizens of Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Iraq, Mali, Mexico, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria and Yemen.
- The King Carl Gustaf Scholarship
Uppsala University Global Scholarship
The scholarships will cover the full cost of tuition fees for studies at Uppsala University. It is for Master’s programs that start on 28 August 2023 and are offered during the current admission round. The scholarships do not cover living expenses. All students are to cover their living expenses.

Master’s programs
Eligibility criteria:
- You must be a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland. Mostly African countries
- You must show/demonstrate great academic talent and show interest in being in an educational environment.
- You can only be awarded an Uppsala University Global Scholarship for a Master’s program at
- Uppsala University chosen as first priority (the program which you have ranked the highest of the four programs you can choose at University Admissions).
- You must have submitted your application for the Master’s program before the University admissions deadline.
- You must meet the entry requirements for the specific Master’s program which you applied for. The application fee and your complete supporting documents must have be received by University Admissions before the deadline.

Uppsala University President’s Club Scholarship aims to encourage and support a highly qualified international Master’s student. The King Carl Gustaf Scholarship – Uppsala University Annual scholarships
The King Carl Gustaf Scholarship is aimed at students who live in unsafe and dangerous conditions in areas affected by conflict or natural disasters. The scholarships will cover the full cost of tuition fees for studies at Uppsala University.
It is for Master’s programs that start on 28 August 2023 and are offered during the current admission round. The scholarships do not cover living expenses.

Eligibility criteria:
- You must be a citizen of one of the following countries: Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Iraq, Mali, Mexico, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria or Yemen.
- You must show why you are particularly vulnerable and therefore in need of the educational environment at Uppsala University, as well as that you have the academic talent required.
- You can only be awarded a King Carl Gustaf scholarship for a Master’s program at Uppsala University chosen as first priority (the program which you have ranked the highest of the four programs you can choose at University Admissions).
- You must have applied for the Master’s program before the University Admissions deadline.
