Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP)- The United States of America

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has a program currently running, designed to ease the Americans from many internet bills. The program is called “Affordable Connectivity Program” designed to monthly give $30 Internet Credit to all citizens who qualify. It’s a benefit program which facilitates connectivity among households in America by making sure they are able to afford the broadband needed for their various work, healthcare, school and many more daily internet needs.

Even though the broadband internet subsidy was launched last year, the FCC has rebranded and changed some of its details. As at today, more than 10 million households have claimed and benefitted from this new program. Congress funded the new program worth $14 billion through the infrastructure bill passed November 2021.

You’ll be excited to know that more Americans are eligible for this monthly internet credit that is given as government subsidy. This is because the maximum income level for eligibility was increased. Since there are lots of partnerships and over 20 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have begun to offer discounted services, households which are eligible can now get free high-speed internet at a very subsidized rate. The only bad news here is that the subsidy was only reduced from $50 to $30 to accommodate more households.

Do you know that it also provides up to $75 internet subsidy per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands? Again, households which are may access a one-time discount of up to $100 to buy a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers if they contribute more than $10 and less than $50 toward the purchase price. Good information here is that the Affordable Connectivity Program is only limited to one device discount per household and also one time monthly service discount.

Flash back to last year when the FCC in its bit to expand high speed internet access and affordability to lower income households launched a $50 internet subsidy known as the Emergency Broadband Benefit . The program was only made available to qualifying American households.

About $9.2 billion in funding for the program was specifically allocated as a COVID-19 relief measure via the 2nd COVID relief bill and the American Rescue Plan passed last March. Adding to this funding for subsidy, the infrastructure bill also adds about $42.5 billion in funding to ensure that high-speed internet infrastructure (at least 100Mbps for downloads and 20Mbps for uploads) is made available to basically unserved areas . Again, $2.75 billion for digital literacy training was provided also.

With the emergence of the Affordable Connectivity Program has replaced the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program which ended at the end of 2021. and the has replaced it. The good news is that all those already enrolled in the Emergency Broadband Benefit automatically continued to receive their $50 monthly benefit until March 1, 2022.

Because of this automatic enrolment, majority of the households that benefited from the Emergency Broadband Benefit don’t have to take any action to continue receiving the new $30 monthly benefit after the transition period has ended by March 1, 2022. It’s important to consult your service provider to know possible available steps to take if your out-of-pocket costs increases as a result of the reduced monthly benefit amount.
